Dynamic Panel Probit Models for Current Account Reversals and their Efficient Estimation
نویسندگان
چکیده
We use panel probit models with unobserved heterogeneity and serially correlated errors in order to analyze the determinants and the dynamics of current-account reversals for a panel of developing and emerging countries. The likelihood evaluation of these models requires high-dimensional integration for which we use a generic procedure known as Efficient Importance Sampling (EIS). Our empirical results suggest that current account balance, terms of trades, foreign reserves and concessional debt are important determinants of the probability of current-account reversal. Furthermore we find under all specifications evidence for serially correlated error components and weak evidence for state dependence. JEL classification: C15; C23; C25; F32

Determinants and Costs of Current Account Reversals under Heterogeneity and Serial Correlation
Empirical evidence suggests that reversing current account balances imply costly adjustment processes. Recent literature analyzes the costs of adjustment processes via treatment regressions and assesses the determinants of reversals via probit models. With larger data sets becoming available, steps to control for unobserved heterogeneity within the data are necessary. This paper contributes a B...
متن کاملEvaluate Simple and Dynamic Probit Panel Models in Forecasting Banking Crises
Empirical evidence shows that the banking crisis is one of the leading causes of economic crises. The occurrence of a banking crisis due to the interconnectedness of the banking network with countries' economies makes it very difficult to study and predict them. The research method in this research is applied. The statistical population of the research includes Saderat, Mellat, Tejarat, Eghtesa...
متن کاملBayesian Quantile Regression with Adaptive Lasso Penalty for Dynamic Panel Data
Dynamic panel data models include the important part of medicine, social and economic studies. Existence of the lagged dependent variable as an explanatory variable is a sensible trait of these models. The estimation problem of these models arises from the correlation between the lagged depended variable and the current disturbance. Recently, quantile regression to analyze dynamic pa...
متن کاملEstimation of Discrete Choice Models Using DCM for Ox
DCM (Discrete Choice Models) is a package for estimating a class of discrete choice models. DCM is a class written in Ox, that implements a wide range of discrete choice models including standard binary response models, with notable extensions including conditional mixed logit, mixed probit, multinomial probit, and random coefficient ordered choice models. The current version can handle both cr...
متن کاملEstimation of dynamic linear models in short panels with ordinal observation of the endogenous variables
We develop a simulated ML method for short-panel estimation of one or more dynamic linear equations, where the dependent variables are only partially observed through ordinal scales. We argue that this latent autoregression (LAR) model is often more appropriate than the usual state-dependence (SD) probit model for attitudinal and interval variables. We propose a score test for assisting in the ...
